The state of UK waterways is nothing short of a national disgrace. If you've watched Channel 4's excellent docudrama Dirty Business, you'll know all about that and you'll know of these two legends.

Ash Smith (left), former Thames Valley Police detective, and Professor Peter Hammond, both members of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution, are the real-life figures portrayed in the show by actors David Thewlis and Jason Watkins respectively.

I had the absolute joy of standing in a slightly-less-polluted-than-normal river in very leaky waders and photographing them near their homes in the Cotswolds.
